The short version. Skelo Sentinel is an exam-integrity tool. It runs only during an active Skelo assessment to block non-exam sites and temporarily disable other browser extensions. It does not collect your browsing history, read your page content, track you between exams, sell any data, or use trackers or advertising. Everything it needs is kept on your own device.
1.Who This Policy Covers
This Privacy Policy applies to the Skelo Sentinel browser extension (the “Extension”) published by Skelo for the Chrome Web Store, Microsoft Edge Add-ons, and Firefox Add-ons (AMO). The Extension is an optional exam-lockdown component of the Skelo assessment platform available at skelo.in.
It is separate from the Skelo web application. Your use of the Skelo web platform is governed by the main Skelo Privacy Policy and Terms & Conditions.
2.What the Extension Does
When you begin a proctored Skelo assessment, the Extension can be “armed” by the exam page. While armed it:
- blocks navigation to websites that are not on the exam allowlist;
- temporarily disables other installed browser extensions that could be used as cheating aids (on Chrome and Edge; on Firefox the browser does not permit this, so students are asked to disable them manually);
- closes tabs that attempt to open disallowed sites; and
- optionally enforces a fixed browser zoom to keep the exam interface stable.
When the exam ends or the Extension is “disarmed,” all blocking rules are removed and any disabled extensions are re-enabled.
3.What Data the Extension Accesses
The Extension is designed to access the minimum necessary information to enforce exam integrity, and to keep that information on your device. Specifically:
- Armed / disarmed state and the exam allowlist — stored locally so the lockdown persists across page reloads.
- The list of your installed extensions — read at the start of an exam so cheating-aid extensions can be temporarily disabled, and used again at the end to re-enable them.
- The URL a tab is navigating to — checked against the allowlist to decide whether to allow or block it during an exam.
The Extension does not:
- collect or store your browsing history;
- read, capture, or transmit the content of the pages you visit;
- access your keystrokes, camera, microphone, or files;
- track you outside of an active exam;
- use cookies, advertising, analytics, or third-party trackers.
4.Why Each Permission Is Requested
Browsers require the Extension to declare the permissions it uses. Each one below maps directly to an exam-integrity function and nothing else.
| Permission | Why it is needed |
|---|---|
management |
Detects the browser extensions installed during an active exam and temporarily disables ones that could be used as cheating aids. All extensions are re-enabled automatically when the exam ends or the tool is disarmed. |
declarativeNetRequest |
Blocks navigation to websites outside the approved exam allowlist while an exam is armed. The blocking rules are removed the moment the exam ends. |
tabs |
Detects and closes browser tabs that navigate to disallowed sites during an active exam. |
host access (all sites) |
The exam lockdown must be enforceable on any site a student might navigate to during a test. Access is used only to apply the block, not to read or collect page content. |
storage |
Stores the armed/disarmed state and the current exam's allowlist locally on your device so the lockdown survives page reloads. |
5.Data Sharing and Transfers
We do not sell, rent, or trade any information accessed by the Extension. The Extension does not send your browsing data to Skelo or to any third party. The only communication it performs is with the Skelo exam page in the same browser, to receive the arm/disarm signal and the exam allowlist for the test you are taking.
We do not use your data for advertising, profiling, or any purpose unrelated to conducting a fair exam.
6.Data Retention
Local exam state (armed status and allowlist) exists only for the duration of an exam and is cleared when the Extension is disarmed or the exam ends. Because the Extension does not transmit data to a server, there is no server-side retention associated with the Extension itself.
7.Security
The Extension operates entirely within your browser's sandbox and only activates its lockdown behaviour during an active, verified Skelo exam session. We follow the principle of least privilege and request only the permissions required for exam integrity.
8.Children's Privacy
The Extension is intended for use by students taking assessments through institutions and training providers that use Skelo. It does not knowingly collect personal information from children, and it does not collect personal data at all beyond the local, exam-only state described above.
9.Your Choices
Installing and running the Extension is optional and, where required by an institution, is used only for supervised assessments. You can remove the Extension at any time from your browser's extensions page. Uninstalling it deletes all locally stored exam state.
10.Changes to This Policy
We may update this Privacy Policy to reflect changes to the Extension or to legal requirements. Material changes will be reflected by an updated “Last updated” date above. Continued use of the Extension after an update constitutes acceptance of the revised policy.
